RE: ANOTHER stolen election?
Posted by MS Fowler: Joe,
The 1960 election was stolen by Mayor Daly and the Chicago machine. It is pretty much an uncontested fact. Nixon was advised that he could win if he protested, but for the good of the country, he declined to launch a protest.
Pretty sad to admit that Nixon had way more class than you or your candidate.
That is the way you originally posted on the subject of Nixon's "class." Notice that you did not put the word CLASS in quotation marks, which would have indicated that you were using the term ironically. It was written as a statement of fact; if you intended it as ironic (or sarcastic), there should have been more clues.
Indeed, there was much fuss raised by Republicans over the 1960 election--far more than even I recalled. It's one of those things that has taken on a life of its own, which proves my point. That is this: The Republican Party has worked hard to create a myth about that election, and the myth includes two important components: 1, that Nixon was robbed; and 2, that Nixon rose above the fray "for the good of the country" and eschewed a recount. From the link I posted, we can clearly see that 2 is certainly untrue. I would argue that 1 is untrue as well, and I have lots of company in that argument. I will acknowledge, however, that it's an arguable point. Even Seymour Hersh, a journalist I deeply respect, things that Nixon got jobbed in 1960.
One thing is very clear: Your assertion that it is an "uncontested fact" that Kennedy stole the election from Nixon. It is highly contested--was then, and still is.
Opinions are by definition arguable; facts are not. Who was it who said that we all have a right to our own opinions, but not to our own facts?
