RE: Conservatives getting totally hammered
I decided he was lying when Saddam complied with every request Bush made, while at the same time the UN Inspectors were saying he had no WMDs and no nuclear program, and we still attacked him. The idea that this punching bag could ever be a threat to the US was always ridiculous.
It's all about to become unravelled. The traditional conservatives are about to bolt. I've been reading on some of their sites, and they are starting to sound like Democrats. If Miers goes through, then the Neo-cons and the religious kooks are going to eat each others children while the Liber-anarchists look on and claim they never were Bush supporters, and its all the fault of the "Republicrats". That leaves Bush with a neo-con base, and that amounts to squat. If the Democrats can get their act together and go on the attack at the same time, proposing a Congressionally-based program of reform aimed at cutting Bush's balls off, the public will go for it just to get some relief, and this crisis in democracy and this war will come to an end.
Check out this paleo-conservative article. Friggin thing sounds like you or I wrote it:
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
