Well, I got the old Red Cross email. Looks like I'll be signing off for a few days. Right now, they have begun mandatory evacuations of Galveston Island. As the storm approaches, if it continues to track towards Houston, they will be moving millions of people out in "zones". Our staging area is in Zone C, so we will be the last ones out of town. We have had hurricanes tracking exactly like this one in the past, and people pretty much ignored them and they all moved south, hitting the sparsely inhabited South Texas brushland country below Corpus Christi, a place where about 95% of the storms that hit Texas make landfall. This time, people are totally freaked out. The gas stations are dry, the stores are empty, and the darn thing isn't even out of the Florida Strait yet. Everybody is leaving town, and the schools and workplaces have all shut down. I hope this isn't our future.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
