RE: Lovely Rita
Well, the first winds are coming in. It is a world of weirdness out there. The refineries are shutting down, and they have filled all the lines with sulfer dioxide gas, which is what gives natural gas that "rotten eggs" order - they do this so they can detect leaks later. The whole town reeks of the stuff. It will take them two weeks to restart them, so get ready for some unbelievable gas prices.
At the same time, the birds are fleeing by the thousands. They are like a wave of noise. They light in the trees for a few moments, and then move enmass a few hundred yards, heading north. It is like an eerie sound wave, something out of The Outer Limits. In the midst of all this, I look out on the golf course behind the house, and there are three guys golfing! I salute them. As I am sitting there drinking my coffee, a mockingbird lights on the chimeny, and starts mocking me. I think it is the first time I have actually ever been mocked by a mockingbird. I could swear he was saying "CHUMP-ass!, CHUMP-ass!". I hope he was talking to the golfers.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
