The storm is now tracking north. Looks like this might be a direct hit on Houston. If I were you guys, I'd fill up my gas tank. If it hits where this model is showing, this will be one of the greatest disasters to happen to the US from an economic standpoint:

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

RE: Lovely Rita

Joke time is over, my friend. If that track shown on that chart holds true, we are seeing an immense catastrophe unfold. Over 10 million people live within the perimeters of the worst part of where that storm will hit. So far we have only evacuated 1.3 million. 80% of the world's petrochemical production is right fucking there, right where that line is drawn. For two days now we have been working on the theory that it will hit deep South Texas. Now we are looking at it hitting the second most populous area of the US. If it keeps tracking that way, over the next ten hours this place is going to go absolutely ape shit.

Hang in there, best of luck, and hope for the best out of something that is already worse than bad - petrochemicals production may suffer but let there be no repeat of 'human' disaster as had happened with Katrina.

RE: Lovely Rita

Current track is in the Beaumont area with wind velocities at landfall in the 130 MPH range. Torrential rains and a deep storm surge along the coast from Galvestion Bay east to Vermillion Bay Louisiana looks probable.

But the eye will be over 50 miles wide where it comes ashore. Perhaps 100 miles! Also, the speed at landing may actually decrease, which is terrible news.

But putting Galveston, Texas City and Houston on the western side is a relief since the most rain, wind and the greatest storm surge is to the East. Their chances of getting trhough this monster are vastly improved over last night.

If you live in Lake Charles, Orange, or Beaumont. Winnie or High Island, it is time to leave. Now.

Breaking news here is that Rita has been downgraded to cat 4-let's hope that trend continues.

Well folks, I am about to flee. I've parked the SL in a parking garage on the third floor in League City, something I may regret. I have rigged my Escort wagon up for a little overnight camping. It's been a while since I've been to Austin, so I think I'll head there. You all take care.

Kirk, I just heard the drive on 45 took 12 hours from houston to Ennis. 280 to Austin probably a good bet. We're expecting a level 1 only on Sunday in the metroplex, SA and Austin.

Don't forget to stop in Brenham for some Blue Bell!

My prayers are with you! (sorry, that's just years of endoctrination bursting out, sometimes, I can't help it!)
