I'm pretty sure, after fifty years of trying a failing plan, that we might want to consider a different way of dealing with Cuba. Yes, Fidel is an ass and hates freedom. That's not a new thing in teh world, he didn't invent it.
I see two ways that democracies defeat totalitarians, militarily and economically. The military is obvious. Economically is more subtle.
There are two ways to work economic defeat. One is isolation and manipulation. It almost always fails because it requires thatthe world buy into it without any defectors.
The other is unfettered free enterprise. When people work for their own reward, they begin to believe themselves capable of more that earning tehir own way. They begin to believe they have value and that becuase they have value, so to with their opinions. And so grows the middleclass.
That is how to normalize relations with Cuba. Offer them completely free and open trade. In a decade, Cuban totalitarianism would disappear.
Just like China.
