Is it too soon to......

......suggest this whole hurricane nastiness was to the believer, a form of stabilizing or natural selection? While catastrophes of much greater impact have been carrying on for millennia, it is only recently that we've been able to monitor them minute by minute, second by second and death by death. Not to sound callous but, we can't all make it out alive. Imagine Wolf Blitzer imbedded in the front lines of the
Crusades, or the Chicago fire or the Pompeii eruption. As long as civilization exists this is going to happen and not even the leader of the free world can prevent it. I still think he is an ineffective and poor leader but not an apathetic one.

I think every now and then the earth has to kill a few thousand of us off. Its just that usually mass casulties occur in the areas without much infrastructure in the first place. We've been trying to beat nature since we became 'civilized', but every so often nature gets one over on us.
Awwww crap! Has anyone seen my Birkenstocks? [:I]

So then, if "NO truer words have been spoken here", we can consider that the statement "NO truer words have been spoken here" itself is not as truthfull as the comment it was supposed to "confirm". Hence, if "NO truer words have been spoken here" is not as truthfull, and given that there are no degrees in truth, that statement is untrue, which, in turns, shows that the original comment was untruthfull.[:)]

Well why don't we try and prevent one of the largest reasons for poverty instead of ignoring it as many feel Bush has done either willingly or ignorantly. Not by free handouts, but by a closer to equal oppurtunity to a quality public education. Spend war money on schools! Duh! Not a 100% fix to say the least, but better than what we have now. Why do we expect poverty level people to even try if the odds are too much against them as they are today and in the USA's past?
Yea, too idealistic for sure, (especially considering our immigration rates) the voting class in the USA says secure the oil, and the rich are more than happy to seize control for material gain and let the voters have just enough to think they are doing their job. I just want a president who will at least try and bring more people into the fold of educated voters. And that means working against yourself in many ways. So we need a unselfish president. Good luck.

Welfare has got to go. It's an inescapable cancer on society. Granted there would be (more) anarchy in the streets if you just pulled the plug but it needs to be harshly addressed. I was on unemployment once and was amazed at the hoops I had to jump through to recieve a miniscule portion of the money I'd been paying into it since I was 16. It seems that same scrutiny does not apply for the indigent. There is absolutely no reason why a healthy person of working age should be on welfare. Do I sound like a right wing nut job?

We may never be able to prevent or control such events but as a result of the monitoring and understanding we are now capable of,we should be working towards residing in less risky areas,or learn to accept the consequences.
If i looked to buy a house someplace and upon searches became advised it was uninsurable for flood risk-wud i still buy it?
Well, i was living in Los Angeles during the little quake of '87 and although my apt. building was fucked,i didn't really give a toss. However,i'm not sure i would be ready to live in the shadow of Vesuvius-just a personal thing.
We can't expect to live risk free lives-we pays our money and takes our choices/chances.

"Do I sound like a right wing nut job?"

Yes,you do!

I think welfare,as a mark of a developed society, should be available to anyone who doesn't want to work. There are plenty of fools and horses who like doing that stuff.
