RE: Kathleen Blanco needs to do what is best for NO
We unloaded a bunch of people that were evacked because of gunfire. Hospitals and Nursing Homes all had to be emptied because the junkies wanted the morphine and barbs. We had five bus loads come into a center designed for 200 people that was already full, and they were there because they had been turned away from the Astrodome. We unloaded all the wheelchairs and parked them in a row. They were parked like that for a day. Picture your grandma, sitting in her own shit, and you having to say, too bad grandma, I got a guy over here with glass shards in his skull. I got a guy with his femur sticking out of his shin and no one has helped him for two days, and I'm the fucking computer guy. Picture that.
The reason for the social unrest is quite simple. The 256th Louisiana NG Enhanced Infantry Regiment, which is usually in New Orleans, was in Iraq. The guys with the disaster plans. The ones who have standing military orders on how to handle this stuff. The guys who live in the city. The guys who had a history working with the local responders. 3,000 troops with bridging equipment, trucks, boats, pontoons, communication and night fighting gear, everything necessary to maintain order, was over in Iraq with it's thumb up its ass. No federal troops were sent to replace them for five days. Why?
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
