Current unofficial guestimates
From hanging around the Red Cross facilities in Houston, the cafeteria where Air Force soldiers mingle with RC volunteers, and info from people actually in the area, I can give some unofficial, this-is-what-I-heard estimates that are truly staggering:
Estimated number of displaced persons in the tri-state area:
Estimated number of displaced persons in the New Orleans/ Baton Rouge area:
Estimated refugees in the Houston area:
250,000. Over the next three days the number is expected to increase to 500,000 as the Baton Rouge Red Cross facilties have become extrmely overtaxed and most new refugees are simply handed a list of Red Cross Shelters in Houston, who in turn will simply send them to the increasing bizarre Astrodome or the at this time fairly comfortable George R. Brown Convention Center downtown.
Estimate number of MRE's dropped into Louisania last four days:
Estimated gallons of bottled water dropped:
12,000, most in the New Orleans city limits. There is currently great question on whether the number of dead in Missisippi has been greatly underreported. There are also rumors of flooded prisons and jails holding thousands of dead that are not included in current estimates, but most rumors are turning out false.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
