Some chose to stay. Others had no choice. Many people were standed in hospitals and many people were incapable of getting out on their own due to being disabled and/or elderly.

What is going on is a giant clusterfuck. Some of the people remaining are criminals intent on hapering operations to rescue others. The police forces have been very concerned with stopping property theft that they have diverted resources from rescue operations. Shit, who cars about some probably-broken-anyway big screens?

The most disturbing thing is the once-again division of the US people. Instead of rolling up your sleeves as a nation and working towards rescue efforts and getting your moronic country back on track, you've broken into camps sitting on either side of a ideological fence.

Read some of the posts. It's incredulous. Someone said that we should pour resources into street-side executions of guys stealing TV's. Instead of thinking about hundreds of thousands or millions of people stranded, homeless, jobless, dead, separated from family and all kids of other shit, someone thinks the most important thing is to deal with someone stealing a TV?

One of the things that the rest of the world always wondered was how the US had such a strong sense of goodwill. The US was always in the forefront of aid during disasters around the globe. We looked on in awe. Now, you folks bicker about some property theft while millions of your own people have their lives turned upside down and one of your cities burns with dead people floating down it's streets?

holy shit
We only good to others, not to selves. Have you not noticed? We spend hundreds of billions to re-build some shit hole in the desert, but won't spend a dime to fix the levee.

We send millions of tons of food to far off land, yet we have countless of homeless people swifting through garbage cans for left overs.

We have Red Cross all over the globe, but not enough flu vaccine at home.

Why does that surprise you? Answer is simple, we've got to look good. Even doing so dying in a god foresaken desert. That's the American way.

RE: Where is that FAT BOY when you need him?

The government officials of Louisiana had no disaster/contingency plan to handle Katrina. The Louisiana state officials had no clue on how to handle the aftermath and the Federal government should have taken control of the relief efforts of the state earlier. Technically, the state controls the federal government’s relief resources in their own State.

The state of Louisiana should have made several pickup points throughout the region to pickup people and bus people that do not have any transportation to a safer area several days before the hurricane hits the coast. This cost money and the taxpayers will be mad if the hurricane causes NO damage at all. Saving money is no excess of saving lives.

We could blame this all on Bush and the Federal government, but the State is in charge of their own disaster/contingency plan and resources.

With what manpower do you expect the state to do this when their National Guard units are mobilized to help sustain the federal government’s dreams of conquest?
Get real, the feds were asleep at the wheel, the state is to blame too but what’s scary is thr delta spread in response time. I heard Ted Koppel on the news yesterday telling some FEMA guy that the news agencies were aware of the problems on the ground while the guy responded that he was just made aware of the situation on that day (Friday) and that now it is factual. What the hell was he waiting for? Were the news agencies staging Hollywood production movies to entertain the public? Lame I say, fingers are going to be pointing everywhere when things cool down a bit and I already see a trend in manipulating the outcome. The Red Cross will be blamed as it is being hindered from delivering anything. It is clear they are the first ones that will take the blame as somehow it will be “proven that they never bothered to enter the disaster areas. Of course the state and the city will be next but the feds… no, that would be too close for comfort.

RE: Where is that FAT BOY when you need him?

I am not so sure about that now. It seems the majority of people in NO are blaming the Feds instead.

I agree the States should run the show, but when it is incapable, the Fed should step in. But it is not the case here, time wasted and people died. There will be backlash by this time next week. Just watch and see.

I am on another car forum having some heated exchange with an ex-military over the same thing. Except this d!ckhead put the blame on the people and the State instead. I think all parties are guilty as far as this whole thing is ocncerned, but I still think the Fed should have stepped in much sooner.

Mind you I don't fault GW on this one, but the Fed and FEMA is a whole different story.

RE: Where is that FAT BOY when you need him?

Back to my original question, have anyone seen the fat boy Jeb at all? I have not heard a peep out of him since the hurricane hit land in LA.

Well then, I must say I am right all along. Jeb's effort in SE Asia is nothing but PR work paving his way for '08. And when it comes to real work, just like the rest of his family --- stay the hell away. Guess if he opens his mouth now, someone is going to remind the inbred his claim as "expert". So now he is dodging all news media. Another fine example of the Bush family.

RE: Where is that FAT BOY when you need him?

Jeb has his own problems in his State. I am glad we have separation of power of State and Federal government. I am sure I do not want Jeb telling us how to run Tennessee. I will not vote for Jeb.

It is unfortunate that the Federal government did not step in sooner when a State is incapable of handing their own crisis. I am still asking the question of why did not the State bus all the people out before the hurricane hit.

CIVIL DISTRICT COURT FOR THE PARISH OF ORLEANS

STATE OF LOUISIANA

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS

PROMULGATION OF EMERGENCY ORDERS

WHEREAS, the National Weather Service has indicated that Hurricane Katrina will likely affect the Louisiana coast with hurricane force winds and heavy rainfall by this evening;

WHEREAS, because of anticipated high lake and marsh tides due to the tidal surge, combined with the possibility of intense thunderstorms, hurricane force winds, and widespread severe flooding, Governor Kathleen Blanco and I, New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin, have each declared a State of Emergency;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, as the Mayor of the City of New Orleans, pursuant to the authority granted by La. Rev. Stat. 29:727, do hereby promulgate and issue the following orders, which shall be effective immediately and which shall remain in effect until the earlier of five days following the date of this issuance or the declaration by the Governor that the State of Emergency no longer exists:

1. A mandatory evacuation order is hereby called for all of the Parish of Orleans, with only the following exceptions: essential personnel of the United States of America, State of Louisiana and City of New Orleans; essential personnel of regulated utilities and mass transportation services; essential personnel of hospitals and their patients; essential personnel of the media; essential personnel of the Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriffs Office and its inmates and essential personnel of operating hotels and their patrons. Unless covered by one of the aforementioned exceptions, every person is hereby ordered to immediately evacuate the City of New Orleans or, if no other alternative is available, to immediately move to one of the facilities within the City that will be designated as refuges of last resort.

2. In order to effectuate the mandatory evacuation, at the direction of the Mayor, the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director of Homeland Security for the City of New Orleans or any member of the New Orleans Police Department, the City may commandeer any private property, including, but not limited to, buildings that may be designated as refuges of last resort and vehicles that may be used to transport people out the area.

The City Attorney is directed to file this declaration promptly in the office of the Clerk of Court and with the Secretary of State.
Note item #2. Why was public transportation, including school buses, not fully utilized? Poor planning, poor implementation, and poor coordination.

Wow, for once I am going to agree with you if these were school buses from the New Orleans school district. Ordering people out off town and not following up with a solution for the poor is as criminal as the federal negelect that region has suffered from.

We only good to others, not to selves. Have you not noticed? We spend hundreds of billions to re-build some shit hole in the desert, but won't spend a dime to fix the levee.

meh, US aint the only ones with that problem. i often wonder the same over here in Australia. We send billions overseas too (yes, billions, not hundreds of millions) some of it to places I frankly feel dont deserve a god damn cent, while our hospitals are short of beds, our education system is fucked and so-on and so-on..... and its the same reason. To look good. But......

Nothings free right? and Just like the oil rich countries the US looks after, so too, in a mini-me like way, Australia also likes to send the bill after the rescue.

Aussie Troops in East timor for a decade- $4.1bn
Associated refugee programs -$1.3bn
Diplomacy and infrastructa -$900m

Knowing a tiny shithole like East Timor is sitting on a massive oil/gas reserve like Greater Sunrise in the timor/australia border and could never afford the repayments and will be forced to hand over rights to the wells as payment?- P R I C E L E S S!!!

Cheers,
