The Founding Fathers did not intend for it to be this way. Congress was supposed to be in charge of war making. The structure of the Armed Forces themselves were intended to be democratic, with militias and draft armies being the fist in the mailed glove. This gave the people a direct interest in the war.
Instead we have given the President too much freedom to conduct war, and with a Republican president this has become especially dangerous because our "all volunteer army" is really a Republican militia, a source of votes and propaganda and the ever present political threat to declare some candidate guilty of "not supporting the troops". They now get huge bonuses, free housing, cheap groceries and hard goods, and have turned our Armed Forces into the equivalent of the Roman Praetorian Guard. Their officer corp is drawn from Republican strongholds in the South, and anyone who is white in the enlisted ranks is usually from some lifelong military family drilled in Republicanism for generations. Being young airheads, many of the enlisted are also easily manipulated with cheap jingoism masquerading as patriotism. Iraq is the end result.
I think we are headed for some very hard times. Polls show Americans want out of Iraq. They voted in a way that says they want out of Iraq. Bush is obviously and essentially in the process of scheming, in the sense a rodent schemes, to subvert the will of the people and continue his insane war. He is beginning to show signs of demented megalomania. I see no way out of this other than forcing him to resign or impeaching him to get us out of Iraq or in the very least force a new course. As long as he is in, nothing will change.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
