We gnomes have a simple potion for achieving space travel. Simply mix two parts cow shit mushrooms with one part lysergic acid. Ground to a fine powder. Add to your favorite fruit drink if you wish to go to the inner solar system, or snort it directly if you wish to travel to Jupiter and beyond.

Nasa Nasa Nasa, what has happened to you over the years.

Quotes:
The members reserved their harshest criticism for NASA management.

"What we observed, during the return-to-flight effort, was that NASA leadership often did not set the proper tone, establish achievable expectations, or hold people accountable for meeting them," the report said.

"On many occasions, we observed weak understanding of basic program management and systems engineering principles, an abandonment of traditional processes, and a lack of rigor in execution."

In another supplemental report, panel member Charles Daniel, a former NASA engineer, pointed out that NASA never did establish exactly why the chunk of foam fell off from Columbia's tank. Instead, the foam in the area was removed and replaced with electric heaters to ward off potentially dangerous ice formations.

This report was filed BEFORE the last mission!

well, that hunk of crap can fly a bazzillion MPH and go from unimagineable cold to vaporizing heat in seconds. All in all, a pretty incredible hunk of crap.
90% of the technology our beloved MBs resulted from research first done by the space program. each $ spins off $30 in the private sector.
And by the way, that was a minority report.

One thing NASA could learn from MB is to not have occupants aboard when proceeding with crash tests.

I feel so miserable without you; its almost like having you here.

Any hunk of crap can fly a bazzillion MPH in space. In fact there are probably a bazzillion hunks of crap flying around space at a bazzillion mph. So what.

Regarding the unimagineable cold to vaporizing heat, good taste prevents me from making light of some cases where this wasn't quite successful.

The original Apollo space capsules were equally capable (sans potential for reuse), but I bet they were a hell of a lot more cost effective.

Your statement regarding a creation of $30 private sector for every $1 spent on NASA was probably true in the past, but I seriously doubt that the 2005 NASA budget of $16.2 billion will create an additional 486 billion in the private sector (that's 4% of GDP).

RE: The Shuttle is a Hunk of Crap

NASA has suffered the typical cycle of government funded projects being overrun by government bureaucrats. In the beginning it was so scary, no one in Washington thought it would work and therefore steered clear of it. Then it worked, amazingly well, up to the moon landings. At which point it became a prime target for the overpopulation of government bureaucrats in Washington and elsewhere. The Mercury-Gemini-Apollo era was run mostly by people who knew what they were doing, without any encumberances by bureaucrats seeking to make careers being responsible for decisions affecting the success of the space program.

After the second or third moon landing the bureaucrats got less skittish and viewed this as a viable career move. They moved in and took over. Project managers now make decisions who consider politcs and technical matters on equal footing, and when a technical failure occurs they are totally confused. They got into the game because they were pretty sure there were no real technical risks. They have no prior specific training in developing highly challenging technical solutions to very risky mission requirements. They are professional project managers trained in management skills, with a greater probablility of having an MBA than a technical degree, or at least a more recent MBA than technical qualification.

Sad to say, but NASA needs to be shut down and replaced by another scary government project that repulses the born and bred bureaucrats. The cycle is inevitable and has consumed other true centers of excellence and innovation that used to reside within the government. Another such agency is the United States Navy's Naval Reactors group. Today it is no more than a hologram of what was once truly substantive. Jim

Gotta agree with your comments Jim!

By the way, apparently I'm not the only one who thinks so!

NASA administrator says space shuttle was a mistake

By Traci Watson
USA TODAY

The space shuttle and International Space Station — nearly the whole of the U.S. manned space program for the past three decades — were mistakes, NASA chief Michael Griffin said Tuesday.

RE: The Shuttle is a Hunk of Crap

my CDT would fly through space, VERY WELL, at 1,000,000 mph......if one could launch it up there....

the problem with the shuttle isn't that its a BAD design, but an OLD one......

most of the systems on the shuttle, are older than my car is....they havent been upgraded, or replaced, because it would cost $$ to do so, and the government wont spend the money on it, NOT when we could fight another Vietnam instead, GOD IN HEAVEN, WHO WANTS TO FLY IN SPACE, WHEN WE CAN BE ON THE GROUND KILLING PEOPLE!!!!!!

stupid morons at the government....[:0]

at this rate, Star Trek will never "happen" in my lifetime......[V][:D]
