Are Swiss watches cheaper in Europe????

I'll be in Europe this fall and have a quick question about Swiss watches.

I've kicked around the idea of getting one of the following watches -
TAG Aquaracer
Omega Seamaster Diver
Rolex Sea Dweller 4000

All are the more "basic" models w/ a simple face and calendar. No additional dials. Stainless steel, no gold, no jewels.

I'll be in England, Germany, Austria, and can get to Switzerland if needed.

Will I save any money in Europe if I decide to make the plunge into fine watches?

Cheapest place i ever saw such watches was NYC.They also used to be cheap in Gibraltar, but i was there leat year and all that has changed.
I think you can rule out Uk or Germany, but Austria and Switzerland,i'm not certain but i doubt you will find a deal.Try ebay!

RE: Are Swiss watches cheaper in Europe????

I think in Bern the watches were about as pricey as here (higher cost of living canceled out the lower taxes) - and I'm sure that the dollar's performance since I've been there has made things worse. A friend of mine bought his there just because he wanted a Swiss watch from Switzerland.

I agree with deathrattle, you can find some pretty cheap stuff in NYC if you know where to look. I bought a real Rolex for about $15. Wait a minute, it says Rorex - I thought it was the guy's accent!

Thanks,

Jeff

RE: Are Swiss watches cheaper in Europe????

I bought a Seiko off a guy in Naples in 1972. Even back then I was sure it was made in the USSR or E. Germany. It lasted maybe a week. Still have it somewhere.

Man, that was cheap!

I can get 10% off and no taxes. But you will have to have about $30 for shipping.

I find that most name brand watches priced just about the same anywhere you go. Unless you buy used ones. And don't forget to factor in the exchange rate as well.

RE: Are Swiss watches cheaper in Europe????

If travling aboard, your credit card will charge you an extra extra 3% for currency exchange. You also have to take in the tax or duty of that country. Do not purchase anything in the Asian countries, because you pay an extra 100% to 300%.

I can get a new certified Rolex GMT II for about $4,100 in Arkansas and Tenn. Bob Richards will charge the same and will ship out of state for about $30 bucks. Because they do not have stores out side of TN and AK, you do not have to pay sales tax. I went to Bob's store 30 minutes after he closed, and he still waited on me. That is customer service.

Goto this link. Both stores are authorized Rolex dealers.

RE: Are Swiss watches cheaper in Europe????

Thanks for the tips. Obviously the exchange rate has a lot to do with it. I'm pretty leary of buying something like this off eBay. The fakes are getting so good - I'd rather pay more and know I'm not getting ripped off. I'll check the web links. The Rolex is my favorite but 2x the price of the Omega (which is 2x the amount of the TAG). I also don't know if I'm ready for the stigma of wearing a Rolex. Leaning towards the Omega assuming I can get a better look at one up close.
