He is some guy. Have you read his book? I did some competitive cycling back when my body used to function, and I have a rough idea of what this achievement is. It makes marathon running look like a stroll in the garden.

Will he really retire? I'm not so sure.

Heh, I haven't been on a bike competitively in 10 years. I'm way out of shape, and have gone back to smoking but I can still hop on my mountain bike and do a century, no problem. My 15 year old is a mile behind me and my wife packs it up in the first 2. The legs seem to never lose it. [8D]

And let's not forget Stumpy Joe Peeps, God rest his soul.

RE: 7

wish he would go 'til he loses. Strong as he is, he could win many more and be an impossible mark to beat for decades. Now that would be something. I'm not sure what is gnoble about quitting even if it is while on top.

How can one ever know one's potential that way?

He has set a mark that will stand for a long time. He is the unquestioned master, proving it to everybody yesterday in the time trial.

Maybe he's ready for a new kind of challenge. Everest on two wheels? Politics?

I've considered this in giving an accomplished competitor the benefit of the doubt relative to charachter.

It is not my place to judge anyone's charachter beyond a passing comment. I am a nobody on the internet.

I thought though, that I would comment on the priciple of quitting while on top. At times it is wise. But mostly, quitting leads to an unfulfilled potential. I've noted that some have stated that they wish to quit while on top as though failure is shameful. What do you think?
