CONDI IN BEIRUT

Condi Rice just arrived in Beirut on an unannounced and surprise visit. She just met with Saad Hariri and visited the burial site of the late Rafic Hariri. She will meet with other Lebanese officials including the President and Prime Minister. It's weird that Beirut wasn't supposedly part of her Middle East tour.

Khalas, now she is going to want a ride with you in your SL[:D]

I wonder why she is there (obviously not just to visit Rafic Hariri's burial site), but why would she all of a sudden want to meet these other officials on such short notice?

RE: CONDI IN BEIRUT

The 'short notice' was to prevent detailed planning for an assasination attempt.

The probable reason for a visit was from Bush's inaugural address when he said it would no longer be the US policy to support friendly dictators at the expense of the freedom of people. Your (Lebanese) spontaneous rejection of Syrian military rule and obvious embrace of a free and democratic state is exactly the type of change that this gov wishes to encourage, especilly in your neighborhood. I expect that's what Condi said to your gov. Words of encouragement and hints at support as you move toward pluralistic democracy.

If your country can do it, as crazy with historic jealousy among factions, private armies, and a long history of instability, then any nation anywhere can. That'll scare the wits out of every Arab dictator--if you can do it, why not say, Egypt or Saudi Arabia or Syria? The amazing thing is that it looks like you guys may actually pull it off.

RE: CONDI IN BEIRUT

You guys are really funny [:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

She's driving her white b.p Suburban.

I think she didn't announce it before coming due to security reasons. We didn't know she's coming until we saw her live at the burial site.

I think she came for offering her condolences and to give her support to the new Lebanese government, the first after the Syrian pullout.

She also is sending a message to Syria. All US secretaries of states used to visit Syria and Lebanon at the same time or visit Syria alone. Because it was useless to visit Lebanon when the Syrian represented the Lebanese government. But now she's visiting Lebanon alone without Syria. The Syrians are furious. Already they have closed their side of the Syrian-Lebanese border preventing commercial trucks from crossing from Lebanon to Syria to transit to the entire Middle East. It's been going on for 2 weeks now, where hundreds of trucks carrying Lebanese products have been parked between the 2 borders. Millions of dollars have been lost in thrown vegetables and fruits, as well as in delays in meeting deadlines. It's becoming a humanitarian issue, because truck drivers have run out of food and have been lying there in the hot summer sun for weeks now. The EU has already warned Syria and said that this would jeopardize Syria's candidacy to the European trade association. The Syrians are trying to punish the Lebanese for their choice in the last elections where the anti-Syrian majority won. The Lebanese government is planning on exporting by sea and air as a contingency plan. It will cost more, but what the heck!!!

I think she was originally going to break her return journey with a stopover in London, but felt it would be safer to call at Beirut instead.

I agree totally. I hope we may actually have pulled it off. But we still fear assassination attempts. Just last week, the defense minister escaped death miraculously when a parked car on the side of the road exploded outside his house. Luckily, he was driving his Porsche Cayenne Turbo fast, so he missed death by a split of a second. He was injured though. Here's a pic of his car. These attempts are very dangerous, so all politicians are taking serious security precutions.

CNN source:

" On the plane to Lebanon, she told reporters, "This will be an opportunity, first of all, to congratulate the Lebanese people on their incredible desire for democracy and the fact that they keep pressing forward and now formed a government."

"I look forward to meeting with some members of the government to see how the international community and the U.S. in particular can be supportive," Rice said.

Asked whether the visit was intended to send a signal to Syria, Rice said, "We don't do that."
A senior U.S. official traveling with Rice said the Syrians "already know our message."
He added, "The fact that we're making it [the visit] is sign enough of the changes made in Lebanon. We're not going to Damascus before or after."

Previous secretaries of state, such as Colin Powell and Madeleine Albright, often stopped in Damascus while on trips to the Middle East.

It’s still under investigation. In fact, it’s becoming the center of the investigation. Apparently the UN investigation team suspects one of the security chiefs who was involved in removing Hariri's cars after the incident and tampering with the blast scene. He may be linked to the entire incident. A suspect tampers and modifies a crime scene if he's the perpetrator or he's covering for the real perpetrator. In both cases, he's guilty. The results of the investigation will be announced this September hopefully.

RE: CONDI IN BEIRUT

I am thinking she is putting out feelers out there for the possibility of some US bases in Lebanon. What a better way to encircle Syria and bring it on its knees.
It’s just another ploy at expanding the US’s footprint in the Middle East. I bet ya Israel is very approving of this move as it may put pressure on Hizbo-Allah and maybe make them go away. Hey maybe Lebanon gets to have Sheba farm back.
