When i lived out on the Island, the local security pigs in Sands Point used to move me on just for stopping at a 'private' beach to look at the sunset over Manhattan-stupid bastards.
I actually see the cops of the northeast and the cops of Texas as two very different animals. In New England, everything is done by the book. If you get pulled over, you are going to get a ticket. You can be a smartass, the cop is going to observe your rights by the book. If he has too, he will give you the department-regulation number of knocks on the head, otherwise, he doesn't care if you call him names. He will fill out a complete and accurate report on everything he does. If anyone complains, a uniformed officer will contact you, and politely take your complaint. If the cop did something wrong, the other cops will only cover for him if they are 100% sure they can get away with it. All the rough stuff is reserved for if they actually get you inside the station house, by the plainclothes guys.
Texas is totally different. Their tradition is of the lawman on horseback, who in the past was judge, jury and executioner, if need be. If you get pulled over by a local cop, he may be the only cop in a sheriff's department that covers 5,000 square miles, populated by 30 people that he is related to. If he thinks you need a good ass-kicking, he is going to give it to you. In general, they will lie thru their teeth to cover up anything any other cop has done, perjure themselves on the witness stand if they think it means putting a guilty man inside, shoot you because they think you need to be dead just because they don't like you, and if they do get arrested, they will never be convicted of anything. The reason why? Because we Texans love them for all of that! We want some 250 lb Arab to get pistol whipped on the side of I-35. We want that criminal in the joint. We don't care if our cops kill people because they are all good boys, and if they killed 'em, they needed killin! And if they get caught, well, we'll fix it up so they can come back to work real soon!
