RE: Why do cities want the Olympics
Prior to the Los Angeles Summer games, the Olympics were a losing proposition. Peter Uberroth (sp?) showed that by licensing everything ("the official toilet paper of the Olympic Games!") and charging to carry the torch one could make tons of money on the Olympics. Many games since then have made lots of money.
Cities wouldn't fight over bids if they expected to lose money these days. It can't be justified to taxpayers.
Greece had the double misfortune of bad press; in particular, with their construction woes; and security concerns. The latter may have been due to their proximity to the mid-east. Maybe a forum member from Greece can provide better specifics.
