Oh well, so much for cooperating!

No one should tick off the marines, they have godly powers: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4643481.stm

"As the marines left "smiling at each other" an hour later, the interpreter told the mother they had killed Mohammed, said Mr Sumaidaie."

I bet ya that NOTHING will come out of this one.

What cracks me up is that you pretend to be so civilized and that your soldiers are professionals. What cracks me up is that you are so quick to point to side subjects to divert the main point. Don’t worry you are not alone and many threads that will follow this one thereafter will point to the barbaric methods used by the insurgents. It is so hard to remove that romantic Hollywood built image of the so chivalrous marines in their task at executing the divine callings of the president.
Go ahead and crack me up some more.
Oh, have you ever read this book: How to Lie with Statistics by Darrell Huff? If you did not go ahead and enjoy it, it may help you solidify your statistical point.

RE: Oh well, so much for cooperating!

Let's see. Guy who doesn't speak English very well takes me into a room with guns in it (I couldn't care less if the guns weren't loaded, it's a good policy to treat ALL guns as loaded). Region is very violent and dangerous. People in the area are willing to kill themselves in hopes of taking out their own people, let alone American soldiers. I'm surprised there aren't MORE incidents of this nature.

Thanks,

Jeff

OK yeah you’re right, so anyone who does not speak English well must be suspect, second if a gun is somewhere in his presence (not necessarily on him) even unloaded (in this case) will receive a bullet in the neck, left alone to bleed while everyone walks away smiling to each other. What “crack me up if he was a suspected insurgent then if those soldiers were professionals they would have stayed to follow up with this lead and haul away everyone for questioning. But no, they had to leave and let the interpreter tell them of the death on their way out. I guess there are more people to shoot in the neck for that day to stick around, small potatoes I say. I love your logic!
Oh, and we must accept that these event should be labeled incidents. What would you call them in your country? Murder? Policy? Oh shame on me, how could I think this way, I should go and learn to speak English so I won’t get shot, it is my fault if I should sound foreign. Oh I got to get rid off my collection of guns, only Americans have the right to do so under the sanctity of their homes. I have two AK47s, numerous shotguns, handguns and hunting bows; I must be a criminal.

RE: Oh well, so much for cooperating!

Scenario 1:

Marines enter a house on a search. They see a kid who's trying to learn English and has a family. They decide he's got it better than kids in the US and decide he needs to be killed.

Scenario 2:

Marines enter a house on a search. There's a kid speaking broken English who they can't understand but the kid refuses to use the translator. The kid brings them into a room, picks up a gun and turns on the Marines (who have no idea if the gun is loaded) so they shoot. They're so relieved that they're alive that it shows on their faces.

Which one do you believe? Rather than being fixated on 1, contemplate 2. Not being there I have no judgment on this case. I don't choose to believe either scenario is real and simply dismiss the possibility of another.

You keep getting bent out of shape when civilians get killed. Imaging you grew up in a nice safe country and now you're in a place where you're shot at every day. To make matters worse, nearly all of the deaths are caused by civilians. Guess who's the primary suspect?

On the other hand there is no compulsory military service in the US. This lends itself to the same problem our police force has - there is a high proportion of people who are simply looking for a cheap position of power.

I refuse to make judgments on cases based on a blurb shared was a few other news stories, so should the rest of the world.

Thanks,

Jeff

RE: Oh well, so much for cooperating!

Here is a scenario for you:
Marines knock at the door of a family suspected of harboring weapons and maybe an insurgent or two. They are tempted to bash the door to add drama to this entry but unfortunately someone spoiled the party as he opened the door sooner. Once they have barged in they asked for weapons and the young fellow was kind of excited to show them he mean no harm and of course being an Arab family there is always a weapon somewhere in the house. On his way to the room where he promised them the weapon the marines were at their highest alert for traps that this awkward kid with his English attempts could be leading them to. So maybe they let the Egyptian translator lead the group since his life ain’t worth that much anyway. Once in the room, the kid had to open maybe some sort of a gun closet or lift the bed but as soon as he showed them the weapon one of the marines let out a squeeze on his trigger to stop this dangerous kid from maybe completing a motion that may lead to full control of the shotgun.
Once the kid dropped to the ground some wondered what happened while the shooter was calming the butterflies in his stomach and maybe for all I know nursing a hard on. They looked at each others and knew that this was wrong but they had to push and control the events from this point on so no settled conclusions can be drawn. So they drown their fears with some high fives and pat themselves for having stopped this animal. They bring in his brother and beat him to pulp as if they were on the trail of something serious like “hey the one on the ground tried to shoot at us, then he must be an insurgent and you must have known about it. Anyway, the brother was probably just counting his last seconds as his life seemed to flash in front of him but somehow he was let go and everyone walked out. I guess they figured they created enough commotion to confuse everyone in that family and of course having beaten the brother that should keep him quite since maybe he was promised to be next if they hear from him again.
The one thing they did not count on is that this family was related to someone who can bring it up. Ouch, someone is probably saying why did it have to be some shmuck related to an ambassador? Oh well, this ain’t the first time nor the last time, so I am gonna get me some more sand niggers before someone stops me.

This to me seems like a very reasonable turn of events. Tragic but not criminal.

Now is where the suspect speculation starts.

Or perhaps the brother hears the shot and comes in. Understandably overcome with grief and pelted with propaganda that the Americans are out to get him he attacks the marines not caring that he could be mowed down in an instant. The marines, shaken up and perhaps at this point realizing that the gun was unloaded defend themselves without killing the attacker.

Or perhaps the family just saw the local reporter wandering around taking the routine polls. Maybe the marines were on the way back to make their own report to their commanding officer and maybe there would be a press release about the incident later on had the BBC not scooped the story.

Both scenarios are perfectly viable. I simply choose not to judge which one happened. My scenario would fit what I know about Americans, but as I stated before Marines are not representative of Americans in general so for all I know they're all racists as you described. My experience with the military is generally restricted to officers who are deployed stateside and in charge of the logistics of running a base - a very different type of person than the people deployed in the field.

My lesson for today is to realize that there are thousands of stories of what could have happened. Based on the facts presented it seems as though we agree that this story was presented by the family. It may be perfectly accurate, but it's presented by the family of someone who's son was killed and is therefore biased. Likewise the story the marines told was from the viewpoint of someone who was investigating a potential terrorist and is likewise skewed.

Thanks,

Jeff

RE: Oh well, so much for cooperating!

Look at the bright side.....the 21 year old is with Allah now. I have nothing but admiration for soldiers who are fighting an enemy with a death wish.
Your holy men created these martyrs and it seems this kid fit the profile. I know you're trying to paint a Vietnam-esque picture of baby killers and hut burners but I doubt that is how this incident played out. The overall consensus here is to just get them home, so shit might start getting hairy as Bush will not have a reputation to protect very shortly.

Shabah
You've come leaps & bounds with your written English the last few days.
The use of words such as chivalrous, divine, solidify, small potatoes, just in this topic alone are remarkable.
You sound more like Kirk every time you write.
