RE: GOP lawmaker: Saddam linked to 9/11
Do you suppose Saddam ran a militant Islamic government? Was he a militant Islam of the flavor that attacked us on 9-11 or in any of the cases you cited? I don't think so. I think Saddam was an opportunistic, savage dictator interested only in his own promotion. He used Islam when it was to his benefit, but he was not an Islamic anything. He was a Saddam first, everything else next, and I do not think Islam came up very high on the list after Saddam. He was happy accepting military training, weapons, including nerve gas and other agents of mass destruction from the US until the US decided that was unacceptable and turned on him. We made him and then made him our enemy.
The reaction to defend ourselves against further attacks, and to make those who committed the attacks on 9-11 pay, is not questioned. It is the substitution of Saddam for Osamma, when one is clearly the culprit and the other has no direct tie to the 9-11 horror, that brings up the questions. We have a limited ability to engage in long range, long term, military initiatives. Why we are knotted up with a large percentage of our forces in Iraq when the threat clearly originated in Saudi Arabia, with great, atually enabling assistance from Afghanistan, Syria and Iran and none that could even optimistically (by Bush League true blue followers) be construed as "enabling help" from Iraq, is the issue. Take appropriate and accurately planned actions. Jim
