Parking Violation

This government not only sticks it to us for driving, with about the most expensive fuel on the planet, but again when we stop. How and why do we let this happen?-it's not as if car drivers are a minority.Good old fashioned British complacency i suppose...oh well...

Parking earns local authorities £1 billion
By A Correspondent

PARKING charges imposed annually by local authorities in England have topped the £1 billion mark.
Total income from parking for English councils in 2003-04 was £1.09 billion, government figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats showed. This represented a 71 per cent increase on the £638.5 million parking income figure for 1997-98, when the Labour Government first came to power.

“It is outrageous that Britain’s motorists are being charged over a billion pounds a year, Tom Brake, the Liberal Democrat transport spokesman, said.

The figures did not show which proportion of the income was derived from charges, and which from parking fines. Mr Brake said he wanted more detailed figures, and was writing to the Alistair Darling, the Transport Secretary, to call for a full and independent investigation into what had caused the increases.

The biggest increase between 1997-98 and 2002-03 was at Ellesmere Port and Neston in Cheshire, where charges rose from £2,000 in 1997-98 to £716,000 in 2002-03.

RE: Parking Violation

Man, I heard parking tickets in the UK are a screamer. Is it true they run about $100 US in London?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Oh yeah-in some places the first ticket is £60,even more than $100 and if you dont pay in 14 days they double it.If they clamp your car it's about £250 for release and around £400 if they tow it.
On top of the duty and tax on fuel, we have to pay £170 for each car annually as 'road fund'yet we still have poorly maintained and too few roads. And there is a 'special' tax levied on top of insurance premiums.

Does anyone remember when you could put Necco Wafers in the toll basket, or is that a local thing?

deathrattle,

I know you have lived in both the states and in the UK. Do you suppose the Royal Family could possibly be blamed to a great extent for the finacial hardships bestowed on the Brits for the cost of fuel and less than favorable road conditions.....and the economy in general? What useful purpose does the Queen and her heirship serve and how much does their maintenance cost the rank and file in any given year?

Just a curious thought.

Chuck E Cheese is the single greatest cause of alcoholism in this country. Imagine a birthday party on a Saturday morning with......oh.....63 screaming snot nosed prepubescent children who are asking for large wads of cash every nanosecond, vomiting pizza and soda on your clothes and descending down excrement-laden slides. Now multiply this number six-fold.....throw in a beer vender and you got Chuck E's

The Queen and the immediate Royal Family are a bit like a living museum, adding animation to many of our
historical buildings and customs. As such they are an enormous tourist draw. The amount of money they receive from the civil list is tiny compared to the billions generated by tourism.Much of the land and heritage that they either own or hold in trust for the nation enjoy a greater degree of protection and maintenance than if left to the whim of changing government policies.Their constitutional role is much harder to quantify, but i think the majority of British citizens feel a degree of security in having an apolitical head of state in the absence of a written constitution. The Queen is almost universally respected and very few envy her lifestyle given that she has a punishing schedule and very little privacy. In the 50 odd years that she has been Head of State i am not aware that she has ever made an obvious or public gaff and given the performance by other countries respective Presidents,Prime Ministers and politicians in general,it's an impressive record.Gawd bless 'er!
