RE: insurgency or popular uprising
I agree with Sen. Biden - the real poll is the actual number of Iraqi troops that are ready to replace American troops. It is obvious at this point that the insurgents are denying us that, and one can only conclude they WANT us to stay in Iraq and bleed. As I have said repeatedly - we are on the wrong side of history - the British Empire, Hitler, the Soviets, the Syrians in Lebanon, us in Vietnam and now Iraq, all prove one thing - wars of occupation are unwinnable and obsolete. In one article I posted on the subject, a British analyst noted that what turned out to be about two hundred IRA members kept a hundred thousand British troops tied down in Northern Ireland for THREE DECADES. This war is just another war waged by stupid war pigs who think death and murder solve problems. The truth is this - as long as people are willing to die for their country and they have access to modern high explosives, the only thing an occupation is going to result in is a steady stream of body bags home, with little in the end to show for it. Ask Hitler.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
