RE: Apple to use Intel Processors

i just dont know. i do own a "boutique" computer, ill claim that. but what is the point of owning such an item when its really the same as every other ho-hum machine available for less cost.

think new beetle circa 1998. same as a golf, same as a jetta, commanding a 20% higher price. its silly, just plain silly.

Yes but people have been awarded PhD in Psychology discussing the anthropomorphic qualities of Apple and how people feel emotionally attached to it.

Apple built the idea of a personality into their computers .... something to do with the stupid smile you used to get when booting a Mac Plus.

Im quite convinced they could have charged more were it not for the fact that they were just too close in speed on many functions to Xeon or P4.

God help you if you wanted to buy a part and fit it yourself. That was what really sucked. Anything like a CD-ROM, Motherboard, CPU or Power supply was highly exotic (not in all situations).

Anyone who buys a PC thinking it's going to be anything but obsolete by the time you get it home, replaced by the next great advance, has not taken time to trash their old Altair, Osborne, or Lisa.

Think about it . . . the only thing an original Mac is good for is the fishtank conversion.

RE: Apple to use Intel Processors

mti-

it isnt that i expect more out of the machine than i should. its a computer. i know its obsolete!(still current model, but obsolete none-the-less)

i *am* a fanboy, but hardly a zealot. steve isnt a god to me, his first new vision really helped the company(or was it the new generation processors? G3/G4?) but the last 3 years have been ipod ipod ipod.

the concern im voicing is that i was lied to. hardcore lied to. apple built its company on being different. after this switch, they wont be and im not paying a premium for an alienware-esque computer. os x is great, but i have bought my apple computers based on their hardware differences, software is a factor, but not so much as hardware.

apple is a hardware company, theyve always argued this. i have a problem with the logic board being the only piece of hardware that is apple original. if i wanted a pentium chip i could have bought any number of computers. i can see paying a premium to repair a proprietary part, but i dont see why i should pay 500 dollars for an apple logic board that costs the wintel world 80 bucks.

wait...

itll be worth it because itll have apple roms-- Bullshit.

RE: Apple to use Intel Processors

Back in the day, lots of computers used the Intel 8088/8086 chips before the IBM PC was born, just as other computers, running on Z-80 or the 6502. Depending on what OS they were running, they were very different. It's not just the processor that makes a Mac different. It's the level of integration that the OS brings to the applications and the way the OS interfaces with the user. Frankly, I could care less if my Mac had an Intel 808xx processor or a PowerPC, because it's the design and the way it works that makes it "different." Fears that Apple is going to become a Dell or HP clone is irrational at this point.

RE: Apple to use Intel Processors

but thats the point!

the system architecture needs to be different to make the machine worth the premium. it should use premium parts.

this, in my opinion, is going to be comparable to the DCX Daimler-Benz thing.

there will be pre-transition premium products and post-transition mediochre products. both will function the same purpose, but one will have a serious advantage. some people will prefer each line.

i only started this thread because im tired of apple cronies saying how smart steve is and that its a good thing.

it isnt.

i am angry at myself mostly over all of it because i bought the hype. im not a hype person, at all. my benz is a dinosaur, not modern at all, in any respect. its one of the machines that the modern mercedes is riding on the coattails of(this is opinion, open to argument even) the industrial nature of the engine was what drew me to both the Mercedes and the G5.

i guess this is better communicating my distaste for the switch. if the mercedes benz had the same insides as a late 70s domestic motorcoach(the P4 processor v. G5) it would just lose something.

i just want a different experience than everyone else. i dont want a pretty, shiny case to be the only distinction between these different "breeds" and thats what this boils down to. again, i did not buy the computer because OSX, i bought it because it was sold to me on the grounds that its processor was its strong suite, only to find out it really isnt.

this isnt a case of wanting something out of the machine that it isnt capable of(E diesel customers expecting reliability) the machine will still serve me well, im confident in that. i dont remember what i was talking about... bye for now

Cheer up! [:)]. You still have a new computer that will do all that you bought it for, and your old Merc. must be the envy of many you know, for it's ongoing reliability.

Windows needs an alternative. I personally feel that the OS-X system has major enhancements. While we are on the subject of superior computers would someone like to tell me why we all dont use Quad Xeon workstations as personal systems ?
