Alumni rate Summers' Time, when the livin' ain't easy

Alumni in Poll Say President of Harvard Shouldn't Quit

By KATIE ZEZIMA

Published: June 5, 2005

BOSTON, June 4 - A majority of Harvard alumni believe that the university's president, Lawrence H. Summers, has done a good job over all and should not resign, according to a poll conducted for a new independent alumni magazine.

In January, Dr. Summers ignited a firestorm when he suggested that "intrinsic aptitude" could be one reason that there are few women in science and engineering. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences in March passed a resolution expressing a lack of confidence in Dr. Summers's leadership.

The majority of respondents to the survey, 62 percent, said they disagreed with Dr. Summers's statements, and 58 percent said they thought discrimination and upbringing, not aptitude, was the biggest factor contributing to the under-representation of women in science.

Asked whether Dr. Summers had diminished the university's reputation, 42 percent of respondents said yes, 28 percent said no, and 30 percent said they did not know or refused to answer the question.

Nearly two-thirds of respondents, or 63 percent, said Dr. Summers should keep his job, and just over one-half had a favorable impression of him and said he was a victim of political correctness. A spokesman for Dr. Summers declined to comment.

The telephone survey, completed by 402 alumni from April 23 to 27, was commissioned by a magazine called 02138 (Harvard's ZIP code), which is publishing its first issue on Sunday. The poll had a response rate of 14.2 percent and a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.

On Friday, Theda Skocpol, a critic of Dr. Summers, was named dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, according to the university. Dr. Skocpol, a professor of sociology and government, was sharply critical of Dr. Summers and questioned his management style after his remarks this year. She was, however, willing to work with him and was to have served as a mediator between Dr. Summers and the faculty.

Dr. Skocpol, who arrived at Harvard in 1975, was denied tenure by the all-male sociology department faculty in September 1980, and she soon after filed a grievance claiming sex discrimination. The decision was reversed in 1985 by Derek Bok, then president of Harvard.

RE: Alumni rate Summers' Time, when the livin' ain't easy

I was highly amused by the outrage over this. I'm not sure if people have noticed, but there are substantial genetic and physical differences between men and women. It does follow that these genetic differences can lead towards a general trend towards skills in certain areas. It's not like he said you can never have a good female scientist, he simply stated that a lot more men tend to be drawn to these fields and research needs to be done ot figure out if it's because men have a genetic advantage in this area. I love when people think "all...are created equal"* means that everyone has the same advantages in life. All it means is that everyone is equal under the law. I see nothing wrong with doing studies to try to determine if particular races or genders are better than others at certain things - this is information. Where it crosses the line is to profile someone based on this information and state that white guys can't jump or dance. Just because MOST of us can't doesn't mean that ALL of us can't!

*I'll remove the word "men" since when this was written it was still PC to refer to humans as "mankind"[;)]

Thanks,

Jeff

RE: Alumni rate Summers' Time, when the livin' ain't easy

I just remembered what I hated most about school (beside occasional alcohol poisonings). Busy-body, Cat Stevens listening know-it-all's who were going to make the world better by bashing all the stigmas and gender-based stereotypes. I had to find a wife in Poland, for the love of Christ.
I'm cautiously rowing from the Kvining & friends shoreline and paddling closer to theboss' bunker.

Don't think of it as camps. IMO people should follow their own stars, to hell with everybody else. In other words, life is not an either/or proposition. There are things worth listening to on almost any side of any given argument. Pick the one you're comfortable with and adorn your soul with it or if it doesn't add to your life, jettison it, asap.

Nah, by the 1980's I'd shifted from being the solution to being the problem. Married, kids, mortgage, credit cards. All of those velvet ropes that bind us comfortably to mediocrity.

My bit was in the 1960's, I think. I can't remember for sure.
