what about a birka (I'm sure I misspelled that)
burka, burqa, abayah, scarves... not allowed.. there was a court action about this not long ago in regards to DL picture... i've never seen a full face cover in the US though....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burka
I can understand the need for identifiaction, particularly when one is requesting a privilege. The practice of a religious belief in public seems to go to the core of the first amendment....waddayathink?

Bill of Rights
Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
"free exercise therof" sure implies that, doesn't it... but if it endangers the public then no... just like anything else

I'm not clear how wearing facial shrouds or coverings endangers the public. How would that be?

Sure, especially in banks and liquor stores. What's the beef?

agreed. there are places where I cannot carry a weapon, namely the courthouse. I can still carry just about anywhere else. Following that logical requisite, I can see why a mask in certain places would be inappropriate.....but the street?

and he did show his face to the cop.. so technically no prob at all but like i said earlier it was WV/OH area.. you'd really have to be there to understand.. although i'd imagine this going down anywhere in the states... curiously they didn't mention the man's race which could actually make quite a bit of difference in them parts..

Hmmm. you may be right. Shameful if race were the deciding factor. I've never been in those parts. Is there a good possibility that it could have been racially motivated use of force?

RE: first amendment right?

normally they would state that the arrested was of color and i sure don't know of any black Normans... but you never know... probably shouldn't assume any racial undertones..
the whole thing may just have something to do with comfort level... i don't think i'd feel very comfortable in such situation...
