Why is mankind religious?

One of the things I like about this particular forum is that if I want to understand what modern ( or post modern) people think about almost any issue, All I have to do is ask.
So the question is, " Why is mankind religious?
From a "no God" perspective, how do explain it? Why is it that mankind has a desire to worship something? I am not asking how people pervert that inate religiosity for their own purposes. Why is man religious in the first place? It must printed in our DNA because it is almost a universal feature. When anthropologists discovered new tribes, they were religious. They worshipped something. In a chance universe how does one account for this near universal desire in the man?
Waiting for education.

RE: Why is mankind religious?

Space aliens I say, I have seen/read the book 2001 Space Odessy.
Religion has roots from fear. Fear is an instinct that we all have. Some dudes figured out how to scare people with more BS so they became leaders. They loved being leaders and it got bigger in their heads so they proclaimed themselves Gods and protectors.
It got more complicated as language evolved and we become stupid from thinking too hard and too deep. Next guilt was added to fear as a component of control.
I can go on, but I will let the chaps add to this...

A answers a need for purpose, a substitute to the cold heartedness and blindness of destiny.
The realization that all might end with the coming to a stop of a series or biochemical processes is uncomfortable at best, at worse, it is the perfect receipe for depression and despair.
A rebelion against "earthly" authority, whereby opressor and opressed are united by subjection to the same godly authority.
A desire to bridge the gap between current knowledge and unexplained phenomena.

RE: Why is mankind religious?

In times of plenty when folks can stare at the stars and endeavor to fathom the reason of existence, we create or discover or have revealed to us explanations that fit the world we see.

In times of stress, horror, and death, we look for comfort, reassurance and hope. We create or discover or have revealed to us the hope, comfort, and reassurance for which we yearn.

RE: Why is mankind religious?

Fear me not as I am the light of the above and the beneath. I shall wrap you with my warmth as you coward from my powers. As your cry and lament your losses I shall compensate you with fields of your fancies and delight by remembering my name in your moment of despair. Pray and humble yourself before me as I clear your path for eternal exhilaration and open up your chest for that breath that you longed for. This is the Shabah way, the only way, you must follow and never depart from the light set forth for you and your kind.

J'éspère que tu ne prends pas mes corrections sérieusement, c'était une occasion de te rappeler ma connerie d'hier en ce qui concerne ton anglais...
