The guy in the foreground gets his own planet.

It is probably his office and it is decorated for faux folksy americana.

Typical politician.

His side wins this one without a glove laid on'em. The opposition makes lots of huffy noises to make it sound like they allowed the majority to have its little vote. But it is actually acknowledgement that had the confrontation gone forward, the majority can wreak a heck of a lot more havoc than the minority.

So the majority gets their way (can they keep from gloating? News at 11) and the minority affects an outward air of magnanimity but seeths inwardly of barely suppressed petulence.

And so, like sands through the hourglass, so pass the days of our lives.

The guy in the foreground comes from another planet -- Utah, that's Orrin Hatch.

Oh, you sure waste a lot of elitist snobbery poo-pooin your perception of others politics. Why don't you just go fishing and add some years to your life?
It's obvious from his reaction that you are putting some serious arrows in his ass.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
