RE: French opposition to the EU? WTF?

Once again, Zeit has a valid point. Tying one nation's economy etc. to another nation's wherein the former will potetially lose ground while the latter catches-up (if it catches up) is a destabilizing enterprise. We'd see the same thing if the US and Mexico were to unite suddenly. The devil is in the details. For example, Mexico's immunization program is virtually nonexistent. If, with the stroke of a pen, we joined our school systems and mingled thiers with ours, we'd see radical increases of small pox, leprosie, whooping cough etc. in our culture. We haven't had substatial numbers of these cases in decades yet the environment there is rich with these diseases.

I believe that the same priciples apply with repect to the economic dynamic present at the embracing of nations with not much by nations with quite a bit. The not-muchs stand to gain more at first and in the long run while the quite-a-bits stand to lose some and potentially gain in the long run...but there is no guarantee unless the one nation completely swallows up the other and assumes all power....I don't see many not-muchs willing to go for that.

RE: French opposition to the EU? WTF?

I'm not surprised by any of it. The French have never been keen on political union with the rest of Europe. They like the EU trade bloc, but being an ancient and proud people, they have never been in favor of a United States of Europe that they did not lead.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Yes, yet the concerns were more of a social nature as "what would become of the medial and retirement systems" after a large influx of cheaper labor. Another concern was the possibility of the enlargment of the EU to include Turkey. One sticky point in BXL for this to occur is the recognition of the Armenian genocide (I have been in battles over this on this forum, you'll be surprised how many are unaware of these attrocities, and how many are aware but deny)
Regardless of the admission that such existed, many people think that Turkey is too far off (human rights, radicalization, women's status, etc...) to be part of the EU, and no assurance is given whether these concerns will be heard by BXL when the decision comes to include/exclude Turkey from consideration.

Of note: the main architect of the European Constitution was no other than Valery Giscard d'Estaing, President of France from 1974 to 1981.

I feel so miserable without you; its almost like having you here.

A continually divided Europe will be less competition to the USA. Now China and India on the other hand...

RE: French opposition to the EU? WTF?

i m french and i have vote NO ! because we dont want to paied for the poor country ! tne french enterprise was going to east europe because the east men was paied small and the enterprise think "it's good we paied a polish men 100 euros /month to work in France ! And this european constitution was bad for us but great for the poor country of Europe ! there is much unemployment in France, the prices are in rise and the purchasing power in fall! We say yes to Europe but not to this constitution which is bad!
imagine : the same work in the same enterprise but one man paied 2000 euros /month the other 200 euros/month why ? this is the european constitution and We say NO ! imagine that you are paid 10 times less expensive in Boston than in New York and than your owner "we moves our offices" and you will be paid as in Boston you would also say to not is not you this step? If Bruxelle change the european constitution we say yes !
