Stem Cell Research: Opposed by our Moron-in-Chief
Today a major advancement was achieved in stem cell research, an advancement one scientist called a greater advancement in medicine than the invention of anti-biotics. Korean scientists were able to take an unfertilzed human egg and fertilize it with donor DNA in a way that it replaced all genetic material in the egg - a clone. They are now allowing the egg to grow into stem cells. They will next remove the stem cells that have begun differentiation into other organs, and attempt to grow a kidney in a separate container. In other words, the life of someone dying from kidney disease could be saved using his own DNA and an unfertilized donor egg. I can only laugh when I think of the discussion we had here on cloning where various posters put forth positions that stem-celll cloning wouldn't have been able to help Chris Reeve - today in the annoucement of this medical advance, it was specifically stated that this method will definitly lead to cures for spinal cord injuries such as Reeves.
Of course, our Moron-in-Chief is totally against it. Because the egg gets fertilized, this some how becomes "using life to save a life". Hey, moron! - its using a microscopic celluar construct to save life.
Coincidently, a bill is in Congress that attempts to repeal the ban President Moron put on stem cell research when he first took office, a move that pleased his ignorant religious-kook supporters, while putting us ten years behind every other nation in stem cell research.
If you, like I do, have a loved one who is suffering from any disease where this therapy could potentially save their lives, or get them out of a wheelchair, now is the time to get on the case of your Senator and Congressman and demand they vote for this bill.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
