RE: Science, religion collide in Kansas debate
I think there is an aspect of personalization as well - at least for men. A Muslim boy is given a Koran at the age of six that becomes the center of his life in youth - he must read it constantly, and memorize its contents, and treat it revently as a sacred object, as it is his direct channel to Allah. To take a Koran from a Muslim and flush it down the toilet would be like dipping a Christ-mounted crufix into a jar of piss.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
