What's in a name?

I've been asked a few times why i use the screen name 'Deathrattle'
It has been suggested that might i be an undertaker,or suffering from a terminal illness?
Neither the former, nor the latter(as far as i know)
The reality is far more mundane.I belong to a web community called 'deathlist.com' which runs a sort of sweepstake top 50 of public figures we expect will 'pop their clogs'(die) over the course of the year.As morbid as it sounds, some of the contributions are hilarious and most members have a death related screen name.Needless to say, when i logged onto BW to research a problem with my 126, i just carried my name over, so that i only have to remember the one.

Now some of you guys and gals in BW have obvious handles, some are boring, some are downright stupid, some are mysterious, some are pretentious and a precious few are creative.

Does anyone fancy explaining their origin?

RE: What's in a name?

you'd have to ask my parents.

Michael Levitt's recent book, Freakonomics has an interesting chapter on names and their connection to social class and success in life. He recounts the story of a young man named 'Shithead', pronounced Shitheeed.
It never crossed my mind before that the elite classes chose names for their children and these names slowly migrated down to the masses.

I saw that review linked by Arts & Letters. I'd love to read the book. That one goes on my wish list for Christmas.

"Botnst", because when I signed-up I knew that when I type I often inadvertently drop the 'a' so I thought it would also shorten it for typing. Turns-out that psychologically it is seriously difficult for me to misspell a word intentionally. I can mis-type and misspell by accident with wild abandon but I have to concentrate to do it on purpose. So it's a PIA to type "Botnst" so I shortened it to "Bot" or "B".

Oh yeah, I spent about 20 years as a plant taxonomist and lately switched to geography. Damned if I'm gonna spell, "Geographer" as a handle and "Geo" sounds like a small car or pretentions of being a Titan.

Sounds fun, what a great site, post the link. [:)]

Although dull and boring ‘jdc1244’ is from 1986, pre Web/html. In those days one accessed Telnet addresses via terminal emulators – usernames and passwords were often required to be alphanumeric.

Isn't a death rattle the sound eminating from the chest of a plague victim in the last days/hours of the course of the disease?

By the way, vote for Pedro.

Mines easy - S for my 1989 420SEL I own (and love). KLASSE, meaning "class" in German, because I am pure German in heritage. 8 for my eight cylinder MB.

"I have spent MOST of the money I have made in my life on expensive women, expensive cars, and expensive drugs. The rest I just wasted." S-KLASSE8, "Belief in the supernatural, reflects a failure in the imagination." - Edward Abbey "Give me a firm place to stand, and I will move the Earth." - Archimedes - 1979 (fully restored) 450SLC - 1989 (fully restored)420SEL - "S CLASS STYLE - S CLASS ATTITUDE"

RE: What's in a name?

I've actually gotten a few pm's on mine. Phaedrus was the protaganist of Robert M. Pirsig's epic "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance". One of my favorite works, and the reason I began a much more in depth study of literature all the way back in my high school days. 242 is from the world of Wax Trax in Chicago.

"Don't be that guy!"

Quote from PCU. Jeremy Piven sees Gutter (John Favreau) about to wear a T Shirt of the band he is going to see in concert.

"You're going to wear the T-Shirt of the band that you are going to see in concert?!?! Don't be THAT GUY. DON'T be that guy!"
