Read it again, Kerry. That is just weird.
Weird it may be, but I think it's true.
Patriotism is very much a religion. Believers like their religious leaders to have experiences like their own. The State is a great protective God in which we can find security and lose our fears and individuality. A leader who can do lose himself in the same God as the followers is a leader that has great appeal.
George Bush is able to present himself as just a simple representative of the omnipotent protecting God/State.
George Bush has appeal for the same reason that Jimmy Swaggart has appeal.

Not weird at all, in my opinion. There's thin line between religious conviction and super patriotism. Bush's appeal may derive largely from that national, shared religious experience--September 11, 2001. It makes as much sense as any other explanation, given the general unpopularity of his policies.

I absolutely agree Kerry. It's no accident that this weird form of patriotism that affects this country since the beginning of the cold war has always been pushed down our throat by religious fanatics. It's always "GOD and country" or "One nation, under GOD" - the State is subservient to God, and God's Will is interpretted for the masses by The Leader. Hitler was a master at positioning himself thusly, and so is Bush. Myself, I am convinced that the Bush family's long association with Nazis caused this particular bunch to have a keen appreciation for these techniques, and when Sept 11 happened, Bush recognized his Reichstag Fire moment had arrived. Like Hitler, in the hour of our darkest need as a nation, God sent us George. Ask any Republican religous fascist. Or just ask George.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

Hey OLD300D, what about this answer to your question?
I can see where you are coming from, but I find Kerry's answer a little more compelling. [:o)]
