Let's try this approach: were we to prove that life is present, would a pro-abortion stance be monsterous?
Your word, your condition -- "life" -- no more, no less. An amoeba is life, an ant is life, a fly is life, so is a head of lettuce. Does a tumor qualify as life? It does have certain general qualities in common with a fetus.
If you are subjected to a botfly infestation, are you morally bound to avoid treatment in deference to the welfare of the larvae?
Are "certain general qualities in common" enough to complete the arguement? Wood and fiberglass have certain general qualities in common. They are both fiberous in nature. They have atomic structure. They are typically found together as complementary components in stuctures. Other than the general commonalities, they are vastly different.
I prefer not to be infested by Bot's fly.
I'm only kidding. The presentation of this angle leads one to claim priority of one life over another. The real issue here is the preservation of one specie at the expense of another. We do that every time we take a bite of any thing but distilled water. The preservation of the specie is as much a part of our nature as anything could be. Self preservation is part of each of us.
As a result, I can see where in the event that a pregnancy endangers the survival of the mother, then the decision must be hers. However, I suspect that the social life of the mother is more present at the decision to abort. Again, I am not bothered if there is no life established.
When is life established? Well I've heard all kinds of definitions. I have my own suspicions. But as far as I've read, nobody really knows. From What I've read, the definition of Medical Death is the standard since a 1981 presidendtial commission. Medical death is defined as "the irreversible sessation of all functions of the entire brain, including the brain stem". So if the definition of death is the irreversible loss of brain activity, then couldn't the beginning of life be calculated at the first sign of brain activity?
That's just my theory.
I also have a theory about where the lost socks go during the laundering process[:D]
