I agree with that point. The guy was one of the millions of German teenagers impressed into service at the end of the war. He would have been a child during the rise of Hitler, and by the time he entered his teenage years, the war had turned Germany into the most totalitarian state that ever existed. He was just a kid with no choice. I cannot deny, however, that the exposure to so much fascist ideology during his formative years seems to have shaped his worldview - he is obviously comfortable with authoritarianism. He is a reactionary choice.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions.
