RE: Pope Ratzinger?

Will he tell me what I can, and cannot wear on my dink?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

You can't really blame them - the odds on catching AIDS from an altar boy's ass have to be pretty low.

Quote from Ratzinger's biographer, John Allen, "Having seen fascism in action, Ratzinger today believes ther the best antidote to political totalitarianism is ecclesiastical totalitarianism."

It sure looks to me as if Ratzinger is jealous of other forms of totalitarianism.

RE: Pope Ratzinger?

The more I hear about this guy, the more incredulous I become. The Catholic church is shedding something like 25 million adherents a year, and that is just in the Western Hemisphere. Most of the Catholics I know, simply ignore all the far-right wing stuff, and go about their lives, using Catholicism as a supermarket where they pull of the shelf the stuff they find useful and leave the rest. How a guy like this is a solution to those problems is a complete mystery to me - in Europe, where the population is way more liberal than here, it is becoming outright rejection of Catholicism in its entirety. This is what you get when a bunch of befuddled dudes get together and try to take us back along with them to their second childhoods.

RE: Pope Ratzinger?

Let's face it -- for most religion is little more than a part of one's identity, rather like nationality and even political party affiliation. You don't need to believe in the cause of the IRA to consider yourself Irish. Likewise, you don't have to delve into all the ridiculous details to call yourself Catholic. It's what you were born and it's who you are. The actual meaning behind the label is of little importance.

RE: Pope Ratzinger?

I suppose that applies to Herr Ratzinger's time in the Hitler Youth.

RE: Pope Ratzinger?

It could, then again, maybe not -- it's all in the details. I'm sure a lot of parents signed up their kids for a variety of reasons that wouldn't necessarily incriminate the kids.
