RE: CBS Strikes Again!
The definitions of things stand-out more clearly in the extremes. War is a great example. It allows us to clearly categorize the various news sources. The otehr one that I find very interesting is the Whitehouse "who's a reporter" foodfight. I saw a panel discussion on C-Span recently, hosted by some capital association of newspeople or other. On the panel were several bloggers and e-magazine contributors. Also the guy whose inane question sparked the whole conflagration, can't recall his name nor the otehr participants, sorry.
It turns out that the newsies are self-defining prety much. The gov doesn't decide who is a newsie except insofar as they decide who gets a permanent Whitehouse pass. Anybody who claims to be a reporter can get a day pass, which are given on first-come, first-serve. So anybody, no mater how obnoxiously prejudiced or saintedly objective can self-define as a journalist.
Its an interesting system and until the C-Span description, I had no idea. I guess I had assumed there was some sort of certifying organization like engineers and lawyers have. Nope. Tomorrow you or I could decide we are reporters and head to teh Whitehouse and compete for a day pass for the briefing room. Yahoo.
