RE: Terri Schiavo...when is the next lawsuit?
The women was a severe bulimic, obsessed with being thin. She had her self down to a concentration-camp physique, and continued to force herself to vomit. She crossed the line one day, resulting in an electrolyte imbalance, bringing on a condition known as Reye's syndrome, a condition I am accutely familiar with because my oldest son almost died from it when he was a baby. If the attack is acute enough, the kidneys and the liver shutdown, and the organs that are responsible for removing poisons allow the release of aldehyde toxins into the bloodstream, and they can bring on a heart attack, which is what happened to her. The combination of heart failure and renal failure starved her brain for oxygen
at the same time it flooded her brain with toxins, resulting in massive death of cerebral tissue.
CAT scans, sonograms, etc have shown the areas where the tissue shriveled and died then became filled with spinal fluid. The only parts of here brain left functioning were her cerebellum and brain stem, which control motor activity. Without a cerebellum, the thinking cognitive part of the brain, to control them, these organs randomly fire signals to the body, resulting in the weird facial and other muscular movements that characterize a vegatative state. The rightwing propagandists have made a few seconds of film of those reflex actions where she seemed to be responding to her surroundings, editing a few minutes from hours of tape where one actually sees the reality - she was a grunting, growning, suffering individual totally oblivious to her surroundings.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
