RE: Your RIGHT to live??? Maybe not!
Michael Schiavo (the husband) did not want these videos presented in court, because Terri's many responsive reactions to outside stimuli, DO NOT meet the definition of PVS (persistent vegetative state). American Neurological Association, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, and the American Academy of Pediatrics produced a Consensus Statement on the Medical Aspects of the Persistent Vegetative State (PVS).
The vegetative state can be diagnosed according to the following criteria; (1) no evidence of awareness of self or environment and an inability to interact with others; (2) no evidence of sustained, reproducible, purposeful, or voluntary behavioural responses to visual, auditory, tactile, or noxious stimuli; (3) no evidence of language comprehension or expression; Eye tracking and Emotional responses are the most common ways of determining whether a patient is responding, and therefore no longer in a vegetative state. The first sign of a patient emerging from PVS is the localizing of the eyes on a visual stimulus. This can be observed because persons in a vegetative state are unable to track moving objects or fixate their vision on an object, and as a patient recovers they regain this ability. This type of a response if most often detected by family members or caregivers that have worked directly with the patient. She listens, hears, and responds. She smiles at her mother. She is annoyed at certain things and responds accordingly. Her eyes track movement. She reacts verbally to stimuli ( not randomly). She is aware of her environment, AND REACTS TO IT. videos of Terri's conscious reactions to outside stimuli - http://www.prisonplanet.com/102403terri.html
