Question about prayer

During the Pope's recent illness, there were newsclips of people coming out of various churches.

Some of the interviewed churchgoers said that they were praying for the Pope's speedy recovery. Other interviewees said that they were praying for God's will.

This is confusing to me. If you pray for God's will, and someone lives, then does that mean that God decided to keep that person alive, and if he dies, it again is God's will. God seems to have a pretty good job, I mean if it comes out life he is praised, if it comes out death - Oh well, it was God's will.

So do you pray for a specific outcome or God's will. Others, more religious than I, say it is wrong to pray for a specific outcome. Just pray for God's will.

I'm not so sure I go along with that idea. Regardless of your religion, please respond with your thoughts.

Its nothing but BS!

If it helps to get you through the night and gives you peace and serenity, go for it. I respect your beliefs and your rights. But are we to believe that there is a God whom we can influence and barter with? If I’m in a bad situation I can sort of make a deal with God? That if I’m very popular and my situation is well publicized and I have many many people praying for me God will change my outcome to one more favorable? What if I’m no one knows of my plight but I’m more deserving? Better still, I’ve been taught that if I really want action, I should not pray to God but to a saint who specializes in my situation and ask the saint to go talk to God for me. WHERE WAS GOD WHEN THE STEELERS WERE ON THEIR WAY TO THE SUPPER BOWL?

RE: Question about prayer

It's kind of stupid to be praying for gods will isn't it. Is there some kind of intervening power that would block gods will from being done? If you believe in a supreme all powerful god then his will is going to be done with or without your prayers.

As for praying for someones health; Is god taking a poll?

Aetheists????

Aetheists???? I'm not an aetheist! Just don't believe all of the BS that's been handed down as doctrine over the years. The God of the bible and the church is more like a pharoh.

RE: Question about prayer

I'm an ascetic, does that qualify?

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address
