Take the time to look at something greater than the most recent century. The region that Lebanon now occupies has one of the longest written histories on the planet. When you understand that, then advise a solution.

While I'm thrilled with your newfound love of history I don't have to go back a thousand years to come up with a solution. It's real simple.

Stop harboring terrorist. Stop housing them, feeding them, supporting them, hiding them. Stop providing logistical support for some jag off that wants to take a brick of C4, wrap it in nails, strap it to himself, walk into a resturant and kill as many jews as he can.

and BTW where was this insightful cultural sensitivity when a bunch of Arabs slammed a couple planes into the world trade center?

I like this argument, "STOP BLOWING SHIT UP!" Can't argue with that.
You use the term 'Arabs' like they're all alike. Are white people all alike? Are white Americans in Chattanooga all alike? How about all black people? In other words, despite their pan-Arab pretensions, Arabs haven't been all of one mind in a thousand years, at least. But if we push them hard enough, they will find a brotherhood they haven't acknowledged in a thousand years.
Kind of like the Belgians and Americans around WWII. Ask a Belgian what he thinks of America now. But recall that we (the USA) was willing to risk nuclear annhilation of our own country, as members of NATO, to protect them from the USSR. When pushed, we will stand with Europe. In a similar manner, when pushed, Arabs will stand together.
The best thing we can do for Arabs is to help and encourage them to liberal democracy. Don't dismiss them out of hand. All I'm saying is to take the time to learn the motivations and figure it out.

IMO, we are at war with people who are without hope except for God. They are dying (literally) for some hope of a future reward or compensation for present persecution. This is a common enough human conceit. easily twisted to political goals.
To defeat this threat requires a dual strategy: Kill the bad guyes whenever possible and improve the lives of the people who support them. I don't mean send Osama's Momma some coupons. I mean help them gain some measure of control of their destiny. A man with hope is a man with a hostage against the future.

I have been living in the Middle East for over 10 years. I have friends in Lebanon, Egypt, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. They also do not understand why their governments support the terrorist groups either. They want peace and a democratic government, but the people in charge do not want to give up power.
If you want to talk about history, the Ottoman Empire had women in political positions. So why did these religious fanatics turn the area backward a couple of centuries. Before the Shaw took over in Iran, the women wore shorts like in the pictures of Lebanon that was posted in another post.
