Nearly 1,500 dead!

The official count last night stood at 1,476. Should reach the 1,500 milestone in the next few weeks. Hardly a Vietnam, but we are off to a good start!

Sshhh...

...and in any case, we decided those 'non-combatants' were not even worth counting, remember?

RE: Nearly 1,500 dead!

If there is anything that shows how complete totalitarian-style propaganda has taken over this country, it is the refusal of the Pentagon to release civilian casualty figures. That and the refusal to allow filming of caskets coming home, and the constant playing of nintendo-war bombs and harping on "smart" bombs is intended to do only one thing - give the public a sanatized view of the war so that they can shove even more war down our throats later.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

-President Barack Obama, 1st Inaugural address

What I'd like to see is.....

A weekly tally with the enemy body count, just like they used to do during Vietnam. Its was just like listening to the football scores. 348 vs 3213! Its was really inspiring!

58,000

More than 58,000 U.S. military personnel died in Vietnam before the war ended.

DAMNNNNNNNNN...
I doubt it will reach one tenth this number in Iraq. It all depends how much longer this situation goes on.

RE: Nearly 1,500 dead!

Yes, 58,000+.

My recollection of the Vienam War coverage on TV is that the weekly death numbers would be released every Thursday night--and displayed on the evening news. They would put the three flags--the U.S., North Vietnamese, and South Vietnamese. By each flag would be the number killed. Week after week, the numbers would be grossly disproportionate--with the North Vietnamese supposedly suffereing casualties much, much greater than the U.S. and South Vietnamese side.

Later I read a book, A RUMOR OF WAR, by a guy who was there and who explained how the estimates of enemy casualties were routinely inflated, by order of the higher-ups.

As for the ban on pictures of body bags and coffins--there was a little story a while back of a National Guard unit that ignored the ban. They WANTED the pictures on the news, and for just that one night, they actually showed flag-draped coffins.

Indeed, it is the essence of propaganda to restrict the citizenry from seeing the truth of a war fought in their name, so as to continue the idea that the price being paid is minimal.
