New "Axle of Evil"

Mercedes Benz drives into Iran’s market

TEHRAN, Feb. 23 (MNA) – German heavy weight car manufacturing company, Dymler Chrysler, will start producing Mercedes Benz passenger cars in Iran as of February 6, 2005 under a contract that would give an equal share to each side of German and Iranian, ISNA reported yesterday.

Mercedes Benz will be the second foreign car manufacturer (Iran Mercedes Benz Co.) after the French Renault (Pars Renault Co.) that has a joint venture with Iranian car makers. The German director of the Iran Mercedes Benz Co. will be Kurtz.

Based on the contract, the cars will be imported on a CBU basis but they will be assembled inside Iran on a step-by-step basis. The target users will be governmental organizations mainly and the price of the products might be fixed around 800,000,000 rials each, the report read.

As agreed between the two sides, the cars will be operated by gas-fueled engines. The German company plans to have another joint venture with Iran for the after sale services too. This contract will give a 49 percent share to the Iranian side.

According to the initial contract, the products were supposed to be manufactured in Iran; however, it was changed to a full CKD contract due to the opposition of the American partner of the Dymler Chrysler Co.

"Axle" Too funny-I read it twice before I realized it,

I wonder if they'll design them to form flechettes when exploded?

Iran to assemble Mercedes cars as Paykan reaches the end of the line; IKD to set up new company for production
Monday, February 28, 2005

Iranian public sector auto giant Iran Khodro Diesel (IKD) signed a deal with DaimlerChrysler Saturday for limited numbers of luxury Mercedes-Benz cars to be assembled in the Islamic republic, the official news agency IRNA reported. The report said that under the deal, IKD will set up a company called Top Khodro to assemble the cars under the supervision of Mercedes-Benz, a division of the German-US auto giant.

Mercedes Benz 200, 250 and 350-E models will begin rolling off the production line later in 2005, with initial annual production limited to 2,500 units but eventually expanding to 5,000. The head of IKD, Majid Sheikhani, said the cars would "fill the gap of luxury cars in Iran".

The official was quoted as saying that only imported components would be used, with the price of each car ranging from 650 million to 1.3 billion rials ($73,000 to $146,000). IKD is Iran's top truck producer, and has a long history of producing Benz trucks and buses under license.

Iran's domestic car, the Paykan, is to be taken out of production before next March, bringing to an end more than three decades of service. The Paykan is a descendent of the long-defunct British Hillman Hunter, the production line of which was sold to Iran in 1967.

Observers says that despite attempts by hardliners in the government to thwart foreign investment through restrictions to protect national industry, demand for foreign cars has increased significantly in recent years.

DaimlerChrysler, which has a major market selling Chryslers in the United States, enters Iran amid increased pressure from Washington on leading U.S. enterprises, such as Halliburton and General Electric to pull out of the Islamic Republic.
