RE: Hey Bot! Is this named after you?
I happened to be reading a rendition of how the USDA effectively eliminated screwworms from the U.S. and Mexico during the early '60s recently. You may be familiar with the story, which involved the USDA irradiating, thereby sterilizing huge numbers of screwworm flies, then dropping them out of airplanes. The author felt this was a miraculous achievement and lauded the effort to no end. She went on to speculate that getting such a program off the ground today would be utterly impossible because of environmentalists, legal issues, and basic philosophical differences prevalent today. The author referred to those times as the "golden age" -- a time when qualified, knowledeable people actually spent time in the field rather than behind desks.
Coincidentally, I heard a local news report a couple days ago warning of a heightened threat from human botflys in Mexico -- reminded me of the screwworms, so I thought I'd post the grisly scene for those unfamiliar with these hideous little creatures.
