Is American Liberalism Dying? (new republic)

I read this article. It provokes some thought on the subject of the viability of current liberal positions. Some ideas were discussed here in a previous thread. If the link doesn't work at first, I'll fix it.

It will require a reg. to logon, sorry. It won't let me do a temp so you'll have to do your own. It's worth it though.

FYI: TNR has trended NeoCon for some time now--big supporters of imperial missions abroad and such. Center right DLC waste of bandwith stuff...just thought you'd like to know.

Can't read the article, but I ain't no Liberal, so I really couldn't give a rip whether the pale imitation of earlier Liberalism whithers on the modernity's vine or not anyway.

No more so than conservatism. Perhaps each will make a comeback some day...

true as this may be, I understand the author is a self described liberal. I posted the link in response to the "What's wrong with the Dems.?" thread. I thought it was interesting that some of the author's conclusions were the same as some on this board.

Do you suppose TNR has trended conservative or has liberalism trended away from TNR?
not a rhetorical Q.

Surely the word "liberal" is dead in the water. The Repos have done a masterful propanda job on it. Most liberals today call themselves progressives.

I prefer "leftist", and I ain't dead yet.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

see that's an interesting point. The author of the article makes the same one about conservatism in the 50's-70's. The article isn't stating that liberalism is dead but that it needs to find it's self again. He gives some examples as to how he thinks it can be done.

corn flakes vs. corn peels

Isn't that just repackaging the same content?

RE: Is American Liberalism Dying? (new republic)

Liberalism has done its job. The blacks are free, the cops don't just beat the shit out of you for fun anymore, women are free to control what happens to their own bodies, free expression reigns, for the most part, and with the exception of the Republican-designed welfare program for the pharmacutical industry, the classic liberal programs of Medicare and Social Security work extremely well. Now the task is to defend these social gains, won by people beaten by nightsticks and bitten by Bull Connor's dogs, old ladies who refused to be starved or forced to die early by greedy pigs, and those of us who think Civil Liberties was the actual purpose this nation was founded ( as opposed to a paradise for the rich oligarchs and religious fascists ), with every fiber of our being, until these neo-facists are driven from government. The pendulum has swung, and it shall swing back.
