true as this may be, I understand the author is a self described liberal. I posted the link in response to the "What's wrong with the Dems.?" thread. I thought it was interesting that some of the author's conclusions were the same as some on this board.

Do you suppose TNR has trended conservative or has liberalism trended away from TNR?
not a rhetorical Q.
Again, I can't read the article, but I see by the text within the link that it's written by Martin Peretz, editor of TNR, who I can assure you is no Liberal. He's Al Gore's mentor and a member of the DLC clones that attack all things Left and Lefter...he left the Left a long time ago--fuggdatbastid

You need to gain consensus about what was, is and will be considered to be Liberal before you can draw any conclusions, especially since you seem to have certain expectations that this article bolsters.

The US has trended more conservative and Marty Peretz follows the money.

would you say that Al Gore is a liberal? If, as you say, Mr. Peretz is/was Al Gore's mentor, then what Al is, was taught him by Mr. Peretz.

You can read the article if you want, I'll PM you my user name and password. Then you can draw your own conclusions. Let me know....

Al Gore is, was, and never will be a Liberal. Read Al Gore: A User's Manual by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffery St Clair

well then, it appears we have differing views as to the definition of liberalism. This is not surprising as the encyclopaedia britannica even has trouble nailing down liberalism; It's statement being, "The expansion of government power and responsibility sought by liberals today is clearly opposed to the contraction of government power and resposibility by liberals yesterday. The content of liberalism varies with the varying conditions: Liberals may one day challenge and another day cherish the church; in one age the may seek less govt. intervention...blah, blah, blah.

I can say this, Al Gore is guaranteed to be more liberal that I, if the current definition is what it seems to be.

I think he would be happier on this web site:

http://www.hitentertainment.com/thomasandfriends/uk/activities.html

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
