Here's a fun exersize for those of you who like geometry problems.

Take the volume of ice in the poles above sea level.

Take the surface of the Earth at present.

Melt the ice. Remember that ice is less dense than water, so you'll get an easily computable volume difference due to temperature.

How much will the sea level rise?

Now take the predicted rate of change in global ocean temperature. Assume ocean mixing. How much will the change in ocean density affect sea level rise?

If you lived in Holland, Florida, Louisiana, Bangladesh, or London, what do you think would be a good idea to do in the next 50 years?

uummmm.....learn what a cubit is, build a massive boat and stock it for the long haul? [:D]

RE: The Arctic and Antarctic ice caps are melting..

seriously though, how much of that ice is already floating in the water and displacing same? When you leave a full glass of icewater on the table all day and the ice melts, does the glass of water overflow?

I am not simple enough to assume that all of the ice at the poles is already displacing water, nor do I propose that the only result of global warming is ice melt. One should also not automatically assign blame to the industry and living of humanity. there is more impact on the environment from volcanoes and bovine flatulence than we impose.

The kyoto protocol agreement is a money suck pure and simple.

Antarctica is a land mass -- it isn't floating. And ice thickness on the continent exceeds two miles in places. If it all melts, look for Kevin Costner in flippers... On the upside, I'm at an elevation of about 2,000 ft. and might be looking at some beachfront property at some point. [:D]

I may be there to join you (it's okay, you don't have to say "hi", it only encourages me [:D]) Mrs. Az may be going to PA school in Phoenix this summer. Depends on which school she chooses......I'm just along for the ride.......em, so to speak.

Phoenix?? In the summer??? Are you training for Survivor or something? I actually like it here in the summer, but most folks around here consider that a bit eccentric, shall we say...

I do better in the heat than the cold. Must be the reptilian blood.....snake, I think. So says Mrs. AZ. We'll be there for two and a half years. After all, she finally gets to fulfill a dream she's had since her youth. Who am I to hold her back?

She says she'll make it worth my while.....not sure what she meant by that[:D]

So.. basically, you guy's are ignorant...

... of what the Kyoto protocol is about? I'm no wiser than you, but live in a country (New Zealand) that was one of the first signatories - yet our nearest neighbour Australia (read mini USA) are not. Apparently Russia only signed up after promises to help them clean up a lot of their post USSR polluting crap that they claim they can't afford to do themselves.
Is anyone here informed enough to comment - ie: does anyone here know what this Kyoto imposition is all about - and why?

I'm not sure it's ignorance as much as divergent beliefs. 17,000 scientists disagree with the conclusions of the kyoto accord based on the science on which it relys. How responsible would it be to relinquish control of a portion of the sovereignty of the nation to other nations whose interests are not ours?

the kyoto protocol is nothing more than a money suck. Personally, I think it is a topic of conversation so folks who want to appear on the cutting edge of world issues have an excuse to say "protocol". I think it makes them feel neato.
