How far right has the U.S. swung?
Watching Meet the Press Sunday, I was amazed to find myself agreeing with Pat Buchanan. You remember Buchanan--Conservative, former Reagan speech writer.
Anyway, old Pat was arguing that military intervention in the business of foreign countries was not the solution to the problem of terrorism--it was the cause of it. He cited many examples of where American military intervention--and military intervention by European colonial powers--led to more grief and loss of life, and less security. He is a strong advocate of national defense, but does not believe it wise to use the military in a pre-emptive way, such as the Iraq war.
It struck me that this is an example of how far right the Bush administration has taken the country, when even a Reagan true believer would see that the Bush philosophy is extreme--and ultimately, doomed to failure.
