African Slavery

Think it was abolished? Nope.

Bot

Born to be a slave in Niger
By Hilary Andersson BBC Africa Correspondent, Niger

Slavery continues to blight the lives of many millions around the world. Although officially abolished in some countries two centuries ago, people trafficking, bonded labour and child labour still exist.

There are some places on earth that few outsiders visit or know about, vast empty sections of the earth where time has stood still for centuries.

Niger is one of those places. It is a country that you can drive through for hours without seeing a soul.

A nation of vast, barren and windswept landscapes, a country of people who live almost entirely off cattle, and off the labour of human slaves.

Slavery in Niger is not an obscure thing, nor a curious relic of the past, it is an intrinsic part of society today.

A Nigerian study has found that almost 8% of the population are slaves.

You wonder how this can be in the 21st Century and why people do not know about it?

We began a journey to find out more.

RE: African Slavery

I looked Niger up on Lonely Planet. Sounds like an interesting place [:0]

"One of the highlights of the Cure Salé is the gerewol festival held by the nomadic Wodaabé tribe; a race of tall, lithe, physically beautiful people, with elegant, feminine features...and that's just the men! In fact it's the Wodaabé men who participate in a male beauty contest that lasts for hours, and which involves hours of pre-concert preening, dancing, and face-pulling, for the benefit of the female judges. The gerewol takes place in September."

Wodaabe men certainly know how to have fun!

RE: African Slavery

There is another tribe that copies the Wodaabe but not very effectively.

They're the Wannabees.

Did you know that Niger is a source of nuclear fuel ore?

RE: African Slavery

Thus the US must enslave the whole country to save the 8% from its own bad people. Wow, look at all the benifits of having nuclear fuel ore away from these savages' hands.
Maybe some democracy there while rounding some of their expatriots in the US for proper indoctrination in the resorts of Gitmo.
Let's see maybe the intelligence community needs to beef up its reach by hiring Bob from Kentucky and teach him some subsaharian language because the natives are a security risk you know.
Come on guys fill in the blank on this one ...

I think the Wannabees will try to take over and fail.

Though I know your intention is to bring this information into the light and to inform us (for which i thank you). I know some jackass is going to make it political in about 2 posts time, or some (over PC) nut is going to take serious offence.

Thanks for highlighting the topic though botnst.
