Seems like everyone on this site is buying a cheaper runabout car,... do you think the price of gas is going to go up again?[;)]

Just kidding, congrats on the purchase.

why?
Because I can't park my Benz'es anywhere in Oakland, and Berkeley. The tree huggers are always giving my G-Wagen the Evil eye.

RE: My G-Wagen Gave Birth to a Green Scion

The scion has a little too much ground effects style on the front bumper for my tastes... but boy are they practical. Those are the kind of vehicles i think are well suited by cleanly designed (no chrome) one or 2 inch larger diameter rim. I actually really like a similar car that nissan will be releasing here (it's been in japan for years) called the Cube. It's a same kind of vehicle and has some really cool styling cues (asymetric d pillar)... which is kinda surprising because nissan is overstyling most of their cars these days.

http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=4&article_id=6858&page_numb er=6

it's at the bottom of the page, but too bad they don't show the rear of the car, that's my favorite part. Unfortunately, finding this link, i read that it will probably be redesigned for release here. THey'll probably make it ugly. :(

Oh, here's some pictures which show the asymetric rear.

yeah, now that you mention it i'd rather park my G in the worst areas of San Francisco (which i do, but for fear of stereo theft) than in downtown berkeley (for fear of vandalism) because it's a target. The only thing it has going for it is that people don't usually know what it is... taking the spare tire off is a quick way to reduce the glam a little if you need to.

Very true! At one time, I remember going to a business function where the host was well known "tree hugger". She saw me pull up with the G-Wagon, I saw the face in her when an SUV pulled up in her Berkeley Mansion. As of course, the lot was packed with Toyota Prius and Volvos'. Later she confronted me and ask If I was the one with the Silver SUV, I said yes, followed with, "....it's called a G-Wagon, they use it in the United Nations for Aid and all kinds of rescue missions".....all of a sudden my SUV was a hero. She went on talking about her UN, peace corp and all other activities she took part in.

Funny thing is that I had to tell her it was a Jeep. (not a benz)

RE: My G-Wagen Gave Birth to a Green Scion

on thing that bugs me is that most hybrids are a "heavy" metal disaster waiting to happen with all the batteries in them. If they don't get a system in place to partially dismantle them before hitting the junk yard they are going to be the cause of their own ecolocial nightmare.

I think buying used cars and buying simple (smaller) cars is one of the best ways to be "green". Improvements in aerodynamics also make a big difference. I'm borrowing a 95 civic while the truck is in the shop, and darn if it doesn't feel good zipping down the highway getting 40 mpg at 75mph.

I dont undrstand why the tree huggers hate the G (and other SUV's). The G is (i think) 60-80% recyclable, while their volvos etc are about 20%!!
