And the reason Brits don't call themselves english-american is because... well... they are British. Too good for anything less (believe me, I dated a Brit for a good two years).
I am confused by this post. Are you talking about a British person or an American? I was asking about Americans of English ancestry, not British people.

I think my question has been answered, thanks all.

Here is something else to ponder. If you ask an Italian or Irishman, their nationality they respond. When you ask someone who is Jewish, they respond Jewish.

I mean Jews come from every country, but they don't respond Polish, or Italian, they say Jewish. If you ask a German, he doesn't respond Lutheran or Catholic?
Perhaps that is because Judaism is both an ethnic group and a religion.

Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.

Did I come off as mean spirited? Not my intent at all. I'm going to comedy camp this Summer. I promise to get better, I really will.
Not mean spirited, just hyphen obsessed. You hyphen stalkers are all the same.

...I could make a rather crude reference to the similarity between hyphen and hymen, but I won't.

Is it actually the case that if you ask an American who happens to be Jewish what his nationality is, he will reply, "Jew" ?

Surely he'll say American?

Many will, yes. Being Jewish is a culture more than a religion. More than that, it's a culture that they're strongly encouraged to preserve by their parents and peers.

I depends on where you are. In America, when one is asked "what's your nationality?" The question is generally interpreted to be an enquiry on one's country of ancestry. If one is overseas, and someone asks "what's your nationality?" its taken as a question on where you are actually from.

I think all the liberal Putz's should move to France.....where they share a common mentality.
