RE: What's Really Wrong With the Democrats?
Dean was defeated by the party old guard. The Iowa Caucus is rigged in their favor, Kerry was essentially picked by them at that point. Dean is despised by the old guard, because he wants to bring the party back to its roots as a working man's party instead of this mish-mash of minorities and the issues of the month clubs. His remark that the party needs to appeal to the "guys with Confederate flag stickers on their trucks" was the subject of a lot of derision from other Democrats, and it was a poor way to put what Dean was actually trying to get across, but Dean is on the money in what he is saying. HE faults the Dems for trying to win over the pickup truck crowd by apeing the Repubs, with Kerry out there looking like an asshole on his goose hunt talking up how much he loves guns - what the dems should be doing is start emphasizing the issues where Joe SixPack is getting screwed by the Repubs - no health care, college costs going out of site, jobs and factories heading over seas, etc. Its also time for the Dems to drop a lot of the issues that alienate the working people who would otehrwise vote for them - pushing "gay rights" instead of human rights, continued support for Affirmative Action, even tho the civil rights era is essentially over, and allowing the various addled old timers like Jesse Jackson, Byrd and Kennedy be the face of the party on the Sunday talk shows.
Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint.
